Writing content to promote a small business site

One of the best ways of enticing visitors to visit your website is by providing them with related sites that contain quality articles relating to your subject area. Doing this not only gives you a chance to promote your business, product or service but it also helps your search engine promotion efforts because of link popularity.

A good way of getting sites that may be interested in quality editorial content is by researching in Google for websites that accept article submissions for your particular subject area. You should also visit websites that regularly publish good articles that use the same subject as yours and then find out their publishing terms. If you have any favorite key portals or news sites which you visit frequently try to email them to find out if you can also contribute editorial materials. The more established the website you get to submit to, the better.

As previously mentioned, article submissions can also positively affect link popularity. Once a “published” article on the publisher’s site is indexed by the search engines (most especially Google) the link from the article back to your own site is going to be factored in with your site’s link popularity algorithm. As your publisher’s site’s Google Pagemark gets higher, the backlink becomes more important in considering your own site’s performance. This would also mean that you should try to choose sites that have a well laid out and indexed.

You must also remember that there is a quid pro quo between the author and publisher. Your well-written article submission must mean that your publisher would be very amenable to publish a link and summary back to your site.

You can follow some of these rules to help your article get pubished:

* Try to write between 700 and 800 words because this is the length that most publishers ask for. But you should always double check this number – some sites may prefer more or less words.

  • Try to explore new angles in writing the subjects in your articles
  • Always make sure that your articles are free from spelling and grammatical errors.
  • As a way to make long articles more readable, try to break it up into section, using headers
  • Refrain from promoting your products and services too much, readers and editors would not like this. They are looking for informative articles and not thinly veiled sales pitches.
  • You should ask editors if there are particular subjects that they would like you to write. This attitude will impress editors
  • Always retain the rights to your articles. There are some sites that ask for ownership, but there are others do not. Make sure that you can submit your article to several publishers. But be careful, spreading your articles to too many sites may diminish the value of your article.
  • As a fair exchange for your article, you must be able to insert a link at the end of your article, usually in the “about the author” section.
